We don’t like to bad mouth the competition, and frankly we don’t have to. Huge, cheap hosting companies aren’t in the same class as us. But people will compare, so let’s address that.
GoDaddy is a large, successful company. The founder is an amazing guy and they offer great services. But hosting isn’t one of them. In fact, when we decided to switch our domain name registrar account to them, it was on the condition they had a tech support staff completely separate from their hosting division. We even turn down web site development jobs when the client insists on using their servers. We’ve been down that road too many times.
But it’s not just their individual, dirt-cheap hosting plans. They offer managed VPS packages. Sort of. With GoDaddy, “Managed services come standard” means system patches and a control panel. That’s not managed. That’s like saying housekeeping comes standard but that means they change the filter on your furnace once a year and make sure there’s a broom in the closet. The next page on their site is slightly more honest: “Fully-Managed – Add $150.00/mo”. This means we give you service they charge a fortune for, but bill you the cost of their virtually “no-support” plan.
The Bottom Line
If we host a single site for you, you’re worth more than an expensive cup of coffee to us. If you need your own virtual server, we won’t charge for a managed server without giving you one. And no matter what your plan is, you won’t be left on your own.
